Getting Your Lawn Ready After a Winnipeg Winter

After a long, harsh Winnipeg winter, your lawn probably looks tired — brown patches, compacted soil, and maybe even some snow mold. But don’t worry. With a little effort, you can bring it back to life just in time for spring. Plus, a healthy lawn adds instant curb appeal — a huge bonus if you’re thinking about selling. Here’s how to get started.

1. Clean Up the Yard

Begin by clearing branches, leaves, and pet waste. This gives you a better look at any damage and helps your lawn breathe again. If you spot snow mold (a fuzzy, gray or pink layer), rake it gently to break it up.

2. Rake Deep and Aerate

Rake vigorously to loosen matted grass and remove dead material (thatch). In Winnipeg, compacted soil is common after heavy snow, especially with our clay-based ground. If your lawn feels hard underfoot, aerating can help — it lets water, nutrients, and air reach the roots.

3. Repair Bare Spots

Cold temps and salt damage can leave you with patchy grass. Reseed these areas by loosening the soil, adding fresh topsoil if needed, and spreading a cool-climate seed mix. Water daily until new grass sprouts, then mow when it reaches about 3 inches.

Want an instant fix? Consider laying down sod for a quick green-up.

4. Fertilize and Fight Weeds

Feed your lawn with a spring fertilizer high in nitrogen to encourage strong green growth. Apply it once the grass is actively growing and the ground has warmed up. Be sure to water it in afterward.

Spring is also a great time to tackle weeds before they spread. Pull them by hand or spot-treat as needed — just avoid weed control if you’ve recently seeded.

5. Mow High and Often

Set your mower blades high at the start of the season — cutting too low can damage tender spring grass. Mow regularly and never cut more than one-third of the blade height at a time. Avoid mowing when it’s wet or muddy to protect the roots and soil.

Why It Matters: Curb Appeal = Home Value

A green, healthy lawn isn’t just nice to look at — it’s a powerful curb appeal tool. Buyers notice when a home looks cared for, and your front yard sets the tone. In some cases, landscaping and lawn care can  add up to 10% to your home’s value.

So whether you’re staying put or thinking about selling, now’s the time to invest in your lawn.
